Last week, HTC held a new conference in Shenzhen. This conference released a new U12+ mobile phone. At the same time, it announced that Vive Focus has upgraded to version 2.0 operating system and brought a number of new features, especially the characteristics of cell phone and VR interaction.
This event can be seen as a Vive session, and the new U12+ can almost be seen as an accessory product (although HTC denied it). HTC's latest U12+ phone does not introduce too much, yet one of its heavy functions is to support linkage with Vive Focus, view notifications, make voice calls in VR, and even add 6DoF external devices that use the phone as a handle.
There are some important information in this conference, we summarized them into 10 key points:
1. support mobile phone linkage, VR can view notifications and answer the phone
Currently, the HTC U12+ already supports the linkage with Vive Focus. You can view SMS, WeChat notification and answer phone calls without taking off your helmet. According to the display in the mobile phone, you can also set whether to allow Vive Focus to access media information such as photos in the mobile phone and whether to allow it. See features such as phone text messages.
Now this feature only supports the HTC U12+ and several other HTC U series phones. It is said that it will be open to other HTC models later. In the post-meeting interview session, Wang Congqing, president of HTC China, said when they are ready, they will also open this feature to other brand smart phones.
2. support the use of mobile phones as 6DoF accessories
At the beginning of the release of Vive Focus, many people were full of doubts about their 6DoF heads with 3DoF controllers. Wang Congqing said that they will have 6DoF handles or accessories, though they did not expect the handles to be released yet. The 6DoF function is ahead of the rest.
In the live demo session, we can use the mobile phone as a tool such as a 6DoF brush to act as a 6DoF controller and it is possible to self-photograph directly in VR's world.
3. passenger mode
We know that the biggest feature of Vive Focus is to support 6DoF positioning tracking. Also, its realization principle is to display the picture taken by the binocular camera in front of the head-mounted display to the inside of the VR head-display screen. HTC said that many players' feedback showed that 3DoF functions, such as video, are enough for the travel or just watching videos.
Therefore, HTC added this feature to this system update and was named "passenger mode." The advantage of this feature is that when you turn it on, you enter the 3DoF mode which is more suitable for watching videos on the trip.
In addition, the biggest advantage of this feature is that it can improve battery life. According to HTC's introduction, the original Vive Focus lasted for about 3 hours. After the passenger mode was activated, the battery life could be increased to 4 hours. Although the difference is only 1 hour, it is more than 30% higher so it is still very necessary.
4. add "View" function which do not need to remove the device to see the external screen
The Vive Focus camera adds more features to this update. This function can display the picture taken by the camera to the inside of the headset and achieve a certain range of movement.
5. App supports installation to Micro SD card
At first, the Micro SD card in Vive Focus only supports storing media files such as pictures and videos or other documents. In the 2.0 system update, Vive Focus will support installing Apps into the Micro SD card.
6. soon support gesture function
Wang Congqing said at the conference that Vive Focus will soon support gesture recognition. The SDK will be open to developers in the coming weeks. Vive Pro will also join it later.
At the scene, a Demo was displayed, supporting only simple gestures such as making a fist, sticking out fingers, extending the index finger and thumb. It is developed by HTC itself. Moreover, in the actual experience the smearing is obvious. Staff said that has not yet reached 30fps but the goal is to achieve 30fps. In short, it gives the impression that the application scenario is very limited.
7. simulate 6DoF Handle with 3DoF Handle with AI
This function is similar to the above-mentioned function. They are all combined through the front camera to capture the picture by the camera through the AI.
8. will support streaming PC VR games
Wang Congqing also mentioned that Vive Focus will also support streaming PC VR content in the future. Whether it is from VivePort or Steam VR platform, 30% of PC VR contents can be connected in this way.
It is understood that this feature is done by a third-party partner. Its principle is to stream content to Vive Focus through a 5 GHz WiFi network through Riftcat's optimized VRidge simulator. In the interview, Bao Yongzhe, general manager of HTC North Asia, said this requires a PC-side WiFi device. However, considering streaming requires bidirectional data transfer, we also expect specific results. After all, being able to stream or access PC VR games is also a natural advantage of the 6DoF VR all-in-one, and it is also what we expect when it is released.
9. other functions
Vive Focus's latest system supports external removable storage devices. This time, Seagate announced that it has released a combination of storage and mobile power, which can be directly connected to Vive Focus.
In addition, HTC is still planning to bring two functions to Vive Focus, namely the mobile phone screen and mirroring to Vive Focus. At the same time, Vive Focus also supports projecting images onto mobile phones. However, these two functional application scenarios currently have some limitations.
10. other highlights of the conference
HTC also showed a carton version of the guitar application, which can be played on the HTC U12+ phone and is still in its infancy.
In the Ready Player One: Oasis Beta, two games have been added: Avatar Creator and Social Area. It also shows the multi-person collaborative teaching and training system based on Vive Focus launched by Viagra Education.
In addition, HTC also cooperates with Major League Baseball (MLB) in the content aspect, including the VR baseball roadshow and cooperates with the McLaren F1 team to jointly create VR products and VR/AR products.
The above is about the 10 key points of VR in the HTC 2018 New Ecology Conference. It can be seen that HTC has brought a lot of optimization and solutions to this Vive Focus.
